Coping methods for when the holidays are heavy

The holidays are thought to be a time of peace, love, and joy, yet for too many people it is a time of loneliness. Sometimes we set unrealistic expectations on ourselves to make the holidays perfect for our family, and it is healthy to set boundaries.

  • Remember Nothing is Perfect. Each year changes with unexpected events such as COVID. Be open to making new traditions along with some old ones. Try to set specific days for baking, decorating, visiting friends, and cleaning. If plans change, do not stress, but instead make the most of the changes.
  • Reach Out to Others. If you feel lonely or isolated, please reach out to social groups, community groups, religious groups or events. Volunteering your time to help others is an excellent way to make yourself feel better and make new friends.
  • It is Okay to Grieve During the Holidays. If someone close has passed away and you are sad and grieving, it’s okay to cry and express your feelings, there is no need to pretend to be happy just because it is the holidays.
  • Reflect on the Positive. Try and accept friends and family for who they are along with all of their idiosyncrasies. They may not live up to your expectations but consider how fortunate you are to have them in your life.
  • Remember to Take Time for Yourself. Listen to music, read a book, geta massage, enjoy the night air, or conversation with a friend. Remember that is it OKAY to say no at times.
  • Try Not to Overindulge. Sometimes stress overwhelms us during the holidays, and it is easy to develop unhealthy coping methods. Try to adopt the healthy skills mentioned here, instead of over indulging in detrimental habits.
  • Remind Yourself that You Can’t Buy Love or Happiness. It is the memories that you are making that stand the test of time. Stick to your budget and know exactly how much you are going to allow for gift giving, baking, food and decorations.
  • If Necessary, Seek Professional Help. There is no shame in despite your best efforts, you still feel sad and anxious, unable to sleep, and irritable, hopeless, and wishing the holidays were a thing of the past. If the holidays are still stressful, seek professional help. KyUMH has two counseling centers available to the public - click here to learn more.
